5th Annual “Bunco for Breast Cancer” Fundraiser To Benefit Pink Rose Fund

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital invites area women of all ages to Bunco For Breast Cancer, a “Ladies Night Out” fundraiser on Friday, November 21st. The event will be held at the Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Road (Rt. 202) beginning at 6:00 p.m. Come roll the dice to help uninsured and low income women with the cost of diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer while trying your luck with this hilarious dice rolling game.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling Leslie Handelman at 860-496-6519. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required.

The event will also feature prizes, a penny auction, 50/50 drawing, hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Chatterley’s Restaurant, scrumptious homemade desserts, and beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages. Proceeds from the evening will benefit The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Pink Rose Fund, which assists uninsured and underinsured women with the cost of early detection screening tests such as mammograms and breast ultrasounds.

“Bunco is easy to play and a whole lot of fun,” says Leslie Handelman, the event organizer. No previous playing experience is required. Players take turns rolling the dice and try to accumulate as many points as possible to win each round. Prizes are awarded at the end of the evening to top winners and losers.

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Pink Rose Program is a grant recipient of The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is a 109-bed, general acute care hospital located in Torrington, Connecticut, that serves as a regional health care resource for 100,000 residents of Litchfield County and Northwest Connecticut.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. According to the American Diabetes Foundation, there are 23.6 million children and adults in the United States, or 7.8% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, 5.7 million people (or nearly one quarter) are unaware that they have the disease.

“One in every three children born in the United States will develop diabetes in the future. This is why it is imperative that we develop a better awareness and understanding of this serious healthcare problem and its correlation to healthy weight maintenance.” said Egils Bogdanovics, MD, Medical Director at The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s Diabetes Center.

The Hungerford Diabetes Center offers a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach to diabetes treatment and management. The team of board certified diabetes physician specialists, certified diabetes educators, registered dietitians, and social workers are specifically trained to help people with diabetes avoid complications and maintain better health throughout their lifetime.
